DL tennis fifth at Crookston Booster
The Detroit Lakes girls tennis team finished fifth out of eight teams at the Crookston Booster tournament Saturday, Aug. 27 in Crookston.
“This was the best we have played so far in our short season,” head coach Tanner Beauchman said.
Josey Allen has proven she can excel as a doubles partner or on her own and placed first in No. 4 singles to lead the Lakers.
“Josey continued to impress us in singles,” Beauchman said. “She took second in the Highway 10 Tournament last Wednesday so we decided to put her at four-singles again. She didn't disappoint. She battled through a tough draw, winning two three-set matches against the top two teams in the tournament. We had Josey pegged as a doubles player but she is proving to a versatile player.”
Brina Smith took over the No. 1 singles spot and won two of three matches to finish as the consolation champion.
“Brina had an excellent day,” said Beauchman. “This is a tough tournament and to pick up two wins at one-singles is a big deal.”
Makenna Duncan went 2-1 on the day to place third at three-singles, while the No. 3 doubles team of Mercedez Bellanger and Lauryn Manning continued to pick up wins placing fifth with victories in two of three matches.
“Mercedez and Lauryn drew a tough first round opponent,” Beauchman said. “They ended up playing the team that won the tournament in the first round. After running into the buzzsaw in round one, they finished strong, going 2-0 and taking home the consolation title. Mercedez and Lauryn seem to get better every time they play. They are already 5-2 on the year at three-doubles which isn't bad for a team that starting playing tennis less than two weeks ago.”
The Lakers host Moorhead and Staples-Motley Tuesday, Aug. 28. The Lakers and Spuds open play at 9 a.m.; DL faces the Cardinals at 1 p.m.
