Laker tennis battles at Bemidji quad

The Laker tennis team picked up one victory in three very tight matches at the Bemidji tennis quadrangular Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Bemidji defeating Staples-Motley 5-2 and dropping matches to Bemidji and East Grand Forks by matching scores of 4-3.

DL got a welcome return in senior Grace Kinney after a two-year absence. Kinney suffered a wrist injury two seasons ago and has not been medically cleared to play.

“It was really nice to see her on the court again, and she picked up a big win for us,” said head coach Tanner Beauchman.

Kinney defeated Tatum Offerdahl of Bemidji at four-singles 7-5, 4-6, 13-11.

DL trailed 3-2 with the two matches in third set tiebreakers.

Mercedez Bellanger and Lauryn Manning won at three-doubles 10-4, but Chloe Will and Makenna Duncan were defeated 10-6 at two-doubles to give the Jacks a narrow victory.

“Bemidji has been a really good team in our section and we played them tough,” said Beauchman. “They gave us some opportunities to steal a win but we fell a couple of points shy.”

Both the Green Wave and Lakers battled windy conditions. East Grand Forks swept three of four singles matches and the top doubles match to earn the win.

“We didn't play our best match and struggled to build any momentum,” Beauchman said. “I have to give credit to East Grand Forks. They played a great match and did a great job of adjusting to the wind.”

Manning and Bellanger picked up a second victory winning 10-4 in the third set tiebreak at three-doubles.

“Lauryn and Mercedez played a great match,” Beauchman said. “They put a lot of balls away at the net and used their athleticism to cover a lot of court. Josey Allen looked really good at four singles. She used her slice to cut through the wind and dictate play.”

Allen had the only DL singles victory two and two over Katelyn Farder and four-singles.

Will teamed up with Siri Vagle to get a three-doubles victory over Kendal Rand and Emily Stroot 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.

After dropping the first two matches by only one point, DL rallied to get a victory over the Cardinals 5-2.

“It was a long day of tennis and I was worried how we would respond after dropping two close matches,” said Beauchman. “We had a few hiccups but overall, we played well.”

Brina Smith stepped into doubles from her top singles spot due to injury and played well despite not appearing a doubles match yet this season. Shelby Busker stepped into the No. 1 singles spot and picked up a big win.

Busker defeated Lauren Rutten four and four. Duncan won at four-singles over Haley Cichos two and two. Smith and Emily Skjonsberg defeated Tasha Achermann and Tiffany Achermann two and two at one-doubles

Bellanger and Manning completed a sweep on the day by defeating Abby DiGiovanni and Georgia Knuchter three and three at two-doubles. Vagle and Will took a third set tiebreak 10-1 to win at three-doubles.

DL takes an 8-4 record into the Mid-State Conference tournament this Saturday, Sept. 15 in Staples-Motley.
