Minnewaska hands Lakers a loss in regular season finale
Detroit Lakes’ top and third doubles pairings picked up straight set victories but Minnewaska captured the rest of the dual for a 5-2 victory at Detroit Lakes Tuesday, May 14.
“Again there were opportunities for our guys to capitalize during their matches,” head coach Zach Biggar said. “We lost 5-2 but there were two three-set matches that didn't go our way. Third sets and 10-point tiebreakers have been a sore spot for us this year. This is something we are going to work on throughout the week as we get ready for section play next week.”
Detroit Lakes got strong performances out of Trey Seebold and Gabe Hanninen defeating Zach Evans and Calvin Hoffman three and four.
Caden Smith and Will Stowman were in command early and cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at three-doubles.
Nate Cihak and Jordan Fields were one break of serve short of giving the Lakers a doubles sweep losing 6-4 in the third set to Nathan Gallagher and Damon Uhde.
A win there and a different ending to Austin Miller’s three-singles match could have provided a win for the home team.
Miller and Minnewaska’s Sam Peters split the first two sets with Peters up a break in the first 6-4 and Miller responding with a 7-6 second set tiebreak win. The third went the distance as well with Peters coming out on the winning end of another 7-6 breaker.
Minnewaska dominated at one, two and four singles allowing just one game in each match.
DL hosts the upcoming Section 8A team and individual tournaments beginning Monday, May 20. Play will be spread out on 12 courts including the middle school. Day one of the three-day event features the first two rounds of team competition. Day two consists of the team final and first two rounds of individuals with the state-deciding matches to come on Wednesday.
