Thin Lakers pull out split in triangular

DETROIT LAKES - Despite not having a full lineup over the last several weeks, the Detroit Lakes wrestling team is still managing to stave off the competition and pick up a couple of dual victories.

The Lakers were able to salvage a split in their home triangular Thursday, knocking off Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 39-34, while losing to Moorhead 44-27.

"We are definitely looking forward to getting everyone back healthy," said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. "Not having a full lineup takes a toll on the kids. They have to start right off the back behind the eight ball."

With three open weights putting the Lakers in a hole against D-G-F, the DL wrestlers maintained their composure and won a trio of critical "toss-up" matches to tilt the scales of victory to the home team.

Tony Sims made a remarkable comeback from a 7-2 deficit to junior Hayden Harm, winning the 130-pound match 8-7 on a late escape for the deciding point.

"This was a kid who beat Tony earlier in the year, so it was a great win for him," Ullyott said. "It was one of those toss-up matches which went our way."

Travis Sims also pulled off a narrow victory at 152 with a 3-2 decision over Ryan Hamernik.

The two dueled to a 2-2 tie through the first two-and-a-half periods, before Sims pulled off the escape with under a minute remaining in regulation.

Capping the victory was junior Bryce Dutton at 215 with his first career varsity pin.

"That pin put us over the top, so that was nice for Bryce to get," Ullyott said.

The Lakers were not as fortunate against Moorhead, which used four forfeits by DL to win 44-27.

"Moorhead has a nice team and will probably contend for a state berth out of their section," Ullyott added. "We just didn't match up well against them."

Senior Alex Feldt hit a milestone Thursday as well, by recording his 100th and 101st career wins, which came on a pair of falls.

The Lakers also downed Park Rapids Tuesday by the score of 38-26, after going on a winning streak of seven from weights 119 through 152.

DL will be in the Walker/Hackensack-Akeley quad against the Wolves, Roseau and East Grand Forks this Tuesday, starting at 5 p.m.
