Lakers sweep Mid-State Conference track meets

Both Detroit Lakes track and fields teams captured Mid-State Conference titles Tuesday, May 14 at Mollberg Field.

The girls took the conference title away from two-time defending champions Pequot Lakes. The Lakers scored 194.3 points to the Patriots’ 152.3.

“This was a big win for us,” DL head girls coach Maggy Doll said.

DL posted victories in six of 18 events.

Abby Larson swept the sprints winning the 100m dash in 13.11 and the 200 in 26.81.

Sasha Sekundiak edged out Staples-Motley’s Aften Robinson for the 400m dash title. Sekundiak’s winning time of 1:00.39 was 12-hundredths better than Robinson’s as the two raced to the finish line.

Sidney Lundberg placed first in the 100m hurdles winning in 17.64.

Jackson Hegg followed suit with a 10-foot pole vault.

The 4x200m relay team of Jerzie Horner, Karrigan Hallisey, Jalynn Gunderson and Annie Paulson recorded the sixth win crossing the line in 1:51.56.

The girls team posted four runner-up individual finishes - all in field events and added a pair of second place relay finishes.

Gabby Fredrickson cleared five-feet in high jump for second place. Jackson Hegg followed suit with a 10-foot pole vault. Karrigan Hallisey was the long jump runner-up at 16-feet with teammates Fredrickson in third and Peyton Jernberg in fifth.

Brina Smith was the triple jump runner-up with a leap of 32-09; Jordyn Johnson finished third (32-01.50).

Breanna Price threw 121-06 to place second in discus with Kylee Price in third place (105) and Jacee Hauser in fourth (98-05).

The Lakers went 3-4-5 in the shot put led by Hauser’s throw of 31-04.50.

Second place relay finishes went to Gabrielle Whitworth, Jerzie Horner, Karrigan Hallisey and Abby Larson (52.29) in the 4x100 and Sasha Sekundiak, Alex Bettcher, Jordyn Johnson and Annie Paulson (4:14.15) in the 4x400.

The Laker boys repeated as champions winning by a 66.5-point margin over second place Park Rapids.

DL athletes nearly took half of the events with five individual wins and three of four first place relays.

Ben Heimark won the 200m dash in 23.75.

Reed Reller’s top challenge came from teammate Micah Solberg in the 400m dash with Reller winning in 52.27, Solberg second in 54.69.

Isaiah Thompson won the 110m hurdles crossing the finish in 16.01. Zach Olson placed third in 17.50.

Caeden Yliniemi continued to post wins in high jump clearing 5-10 for first place and long jump trio of Jackson Rhodes (20-02), Christian Solberg (19-06) and Thompson (19-05.25) took the top three finishes.,

Will Green, Garret Bakken, Ben Heimark and Christian Solberg ran 45.71 to win the 4x100m relay.

Green and Heimark handed off to Jake Bettcher and Thompson for the 4x200 win (1:33.32).

In the 4x400, Bettcher, Tanner Olson, Thompson and Reller posted victory in 3:33.84.

Park Rapids Area (8:24.43) negated the relay sweep besting the second place DL team of Olson, Peyton Nordby, Jonathon Hausten and Grant Fritch-Gallatin (8:32.57).

Fritch-Gallatin was the 800m runner-up (2:08.26).

Garret Bakken placed second in the 100m dash running 11.61, teammate Jackson Rhodes placed fourth (11.94).

Jake Bettcher cleared 41-06 for second place in the triple jump. Heimark placed third with 385-02.25 and Avery Walz fourth (38-01).

In throws, Charles Barnett placed third in shot (41-07.50) and Caleb Tangen was fourth in discus (115-07).
