The Detroit Lakes boys track team posted the second-best finish in program history at the Minnesota Coaches Association state True Team Track and Field Championships at Pony Stadium of Stillwater High School Saturday, May 18.

Detroit Lakes placed fourth overall with a score of 489 finishing behind Willmar (582), Jordan (573) and Mankato East (553) in a field of a dozen teams.

“I was really proud of the way the guys competed on Saturday,” DL head coach Bill Kvebak said. “We had some really good performances. We really battled this weekend, not everything went our way, but it was fun to hear our school slip into 3rd place at one point in the meet knowing we were competing with the best of them and eventually finishing in 4th. Huge accomplishment for our program and we hope this is just another step in the right direction toward a championship. I really have to thank coach Paulson who has planned all the sprinter workouts this season and coach Fredrickson who works on starts and hand offs we were very competitive in those events.”

The Willmar Cardinals captured both boys and girls state titles. The Willmar boys won their fourth-straight AA championship, the Willmar girls broke through to earn their first AA state title after three-straight runner-up finishes.

The Lakers had one individual state champion, no stranger to winning at the state level, Isaiah Thompson, who bested the 110m hurdles field with a time of 15.13. The DL junior already owns back-to-back wrestling state titles.

“Isaiah was impressive in the 110 hurdles winning the meet and setting a personal record by almost half a second,” said Kvebak.

Isaiah Thompson

Thompson’s win definitely puts him in the running for a shot at state with the section championships coming up at the end of the month.

“The section has about four guys who are really good in this event and it is going to be a dogfight for the section championship,” said Kvebak.

Will Green posted an eighth place finish in the 200m dash but it was the time he ran that stood out to Kvebak.

“Will's 200 time is the first time we have had a kid run under 23 seconds since I have been here,” he said.

Kvebak also praised his senior class, a group that has grown in leadership as the season wanes to the postseason.

“Our seniors Reed Reller, Tanner Olson, Jake Bettcher, Will Green, Tucker Strawsell, and Charles Barnett were all standout performers at this meet and throughout their careers; I'm happy for them and excited to see what they can accomplish at sections,” Kvebak said.

Green added a fifth place 100m time of 11.50.

Reller placed fifth in the 400 running 52.35.

Olson ran the fourth-fastest two-mile time of 10:23.71

The Lakers had a pair of third place relays.

Garret Bakken, Will Green, Ben Heimark and Christian Solberg ran 45.13 in the 4x100.

Reller, Christian Solberg, Ben Heimark and Thompson posted 1:33.55 in the 4x200.

The four relay teams accumulated 93 team points of the Lakers’ 489 total.

Freshman Caeden Yliniemi continued his strong jumping season posting the top field even result for the Lakers with a fourth place high jump of 5-10.

Brock Harrier finished in the top half of the shot put field with a sixth place throw of 43-05.25.

Both Laker track teams are off until the section championships. Day one of sections will be held Wednesday, May 29 at Fergus Falls and day two Saturday, June 1 in Willmar.
