The Detroit Lakes girls track and field team placed fourth at the Alexandria Invitational and 10th at the Class AA state True Team championship, held virtually, Friday, May 28, at Alexandria high school.

“We had a lot of girls really step up for their team,” Laker head coach Maggy Doll said. Both Julia Steffl and Kira Wolf dropped about 30 seconds each in the 3,200, after Julia also dropped time in the mile earlier in the day. We also had some kids get personal bests in both the long jump and triple.”

Eighth-grader Mallory Fischer long jumped 15' 7.5, while senior Jordyn Johnson also stepped up with a jump of 14' 11.5.

Sasha Sekundiak had a big day setting a personal best in the 400m (59.68), which was good for first place at the Alex Invite and third overall at state True Team. Her triple jump of 33-11.5 was also a personal best and good for second place at the invitational and eighth at state.

The Lakers had one True Team state championship finish in the 4x200m relay. Sophomore Jerzie Horner, eighth-grader Clara Robin, freshman Ella Paulson and junior Annie Paulson scored 36 team points in placing first with a winning time of 1:50.38.

The 4x100 team of Ella Paulson, Robin, Horner and Abby Larson finished fourth overall, good for 27 team points, with a time of 52.40.

Other top state True Team finishes included:

Grace Gunderson cleared 5-feet in the high jump to tie for second place.

Rylee Johnson finished seventh in the 100m hurdles (17.43).

Steffl was eighth in the 3,200m (12:32.43).

Larson placed 10th in the 100m dash (13.28).

Kylee Price had a seventh place discus throw of 104-04; freshman Elle Bettcher threw a season-best 99-1 to finish just out of the top 10 in 11th place.

The Lakers scored 67.5 points at the Alex Invite to finish ahead of Bemidji.

DL’s 376-point total at state True Team was good for 10th place. Times from Alex were used virtually to compete against 11 other teams.

The Lakers boys competed at Alexandria placing fifth.

DL’s lone score from the meet was a 5-2 high jump by Clay Perkins to tie for sixth place.

The section championship meet is scheduled for Wednesday, June 9, in Sartell.
