The Detroit Lakes girls track and field team had one medalist and put four runners into the finals on day one of the Section 8AA championships in Sartell Wednesday, June 9.

Four girls events went to the finals and state berths on day one: the 3,200m, discus throw, long jump and high jump. The top six finishers medal and the top two finishers and athletes meeting the state qualifying standard advance to state.

Freshman Grace Gunderson was DL’s lone medalist placing fourth in the high jump at 5-2.

Gunderson was clean on five of six jumps with a lone foul at 5-1. She cleared 5-2 on her first attempt.

The state high jump standard is 5-5.

Willmar junior Ava Brogren won the event clearing 5-4. Fergus Falls junior Ainsley Hansen nabbed the second state spot at 5-2 with a run of successful jumps until missing at 5-3.

The top eight preliminary finalists advance to the section finals. Four DL underclassmen runners advanced.

Junior Sasha Sekundiak had the top Laker finish on the track in the 200m dash with a time of 28.45, good for fifth place.

Sophomore Abby Larson made the finals in the 100m dash finishing sixth (13.39).

Junior Annie Paulson placed sixth in the 300m hurdles (49.48).

Freshman Rylee Johnson was sixth in the 100m hurdles (17.06).

Freshman Elle Bettcher (101-09.50) and senior Kylee Price (100-02.50) were in the running for the discus finals. The final spot was claimed by Moorhead senior Bailey Overbo (105-00.50).

No Laker boys advanced. Freshman Brandton Marsh recorded an 11th place triple jump of 39-04.75, that was less than a foot from the final qualifying jump of 40-02.

The Section 8AA finals will be held at Fergus Falls high school Saturday, June 12. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m.; track events start at 10 a.m.
