TRACK: Hornet girls second, boys third at D-G-F Invite

The Frazee girls track and field team placed second while the boys team finished third at the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Invitational Friday, April 27 in Glyndon.

The Frazee girls track and field team placed second while the boys team finished third at the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Invitational Friday, April 27 in Glyndon.

“It was extremely windy but I thought our kids handled the conditions pretty well,” boys head coach Brian Tangen said. “We are starting to see some pretty good performances.”

Hornet girls picked up victories in seven of 18 events to lead the team to 141 total points and a runner-up finish to the host Rebels (182.5). Frazee outscored Barnesville by 3.5 points to secure second place.

“We had some kids in a few different events than normal to try and get some times on them in preparation for True Team,” said girls head coach Jim Jacobson. “We were happy to get out and compete.”

Ellie Morgan had a pair of distance wins taking the 1,600m run (5:46.61) and the 3,200m run in 12:16.18.

Paige Ziegler also had two of the Hornet’s wins capturing the 100m hurdles (15.34) and the triple jump clearing 35-feet, seven inches. Teammate Jaryn Johannsen placed third in the 100m hurdles in a time of 16.70.

Johannsen was the 300m hurdles winner beating the field in 48.70, the only time under 50-seconds.

Olivia Erickson three 33-02 to place first in shot put winning a tight contest with D-G-F’s Grace Steichen (33-01) by one inch.

Frazee’s 4x100m relay team of Paige Ziegler, Ellie Reierson, Rylee Moore and Paige Oswald ran 53.31 for victory.

Oswald added a third place finish in the 100m dash running 12.91 with Reierson fourth in 13.05. Oswald was the top Hornet in the 400m dash placing third in 1:073.32.

Johannsen (28.03) and Ziegler (28.18) placed fifth and sixth in the 200m dash.

Oswald (15-08.50) and Johannsen (15-04) placed fourth and fifth in long jump. Moore tied for fourth in high jump clearing 04-04.

Cassie Lawrence recorded a fifth place pole vault at 05-09.

The Hornet boys team picked up five event victories to score 108 points placing third behind D-G-F (224) and Ada-Borup/Norman County West (173).

Caleb Wutzke ran 23.17 to win the 200m dash.

Joby Giefer won the 110m hurdles (16.52) and placed third in the 300m hurdles (46.45) behind teammate and winner Mike Miller (44.46).

In the field, Vincent Helmers threw 48-feet to win the shot put.

The Hornets had one relay win in the 4x200 by Cole Fleisher, Kaden Hiemenz, Wutzke and Miller in a time of 1:38.36. The 4x400 team (Fleisher, Geifer, Wutzke, Miller) and the 4x800 team (Christian Carlson, Lewis Helmers, Grady Larsen, Colby Erickson) both had runners-up finishes.

Fleisher had a strong day in jumps placing third in the long jump (18-05) and second in triple jump (39-10). Miller (39-00) finished fifth in the triple.

Distance runners Larsen and Carlson placed back-to-back in third and fourth in the 3,200m run. Larsen ran 11:16.35; Carlson finished in a time of 11:26.04.

Frazee will be in action at the Craig Fredrickson Invitational in Detroit Lakes Thursday, May 3 beginning at 3 p.m. at Mollberg Field.
