Ullyott and Henderson both place at state wrestling
Detroit Lakes seniors finish high school wrestling careers with state medals.
Detroit Lakes seniors Brody Ullyott and Blaine Henderson both medaled at the Class AA state wrestling tournament at St. Michael-Albertville high school Friday, March 26.
Ullyott followed up a 138-pound second place finish in 2020 with a third place medal at 145-pounds.
Ullyott dominated his quarterfinal match defeating Lake City junior Jonathan Harvey in an 8-1 decision. After a scoreless first period, Ullyott scored six points in the second, escape, takedown and a three-point nearfall to put a comfortable lead on the scoreboard.
Kasson-Mantorville junior Logan Vaughan, the eventual runner-up, held a lead for the entirety of an 8-3 semifinal victory.
The loss sent Ullyott to the third place match, where he defeated senior Connor Simmonds of Fairmont-Martin County West 6-3.
Ullyott scored a first period takedown and a 2-0 lead he carried to the third period. The duo combined for seven points scored in the final two minutes, with Ullyott putting up four of those points and a pair of escapes and a takedown.
Ullyott finished the season with a record of 29-4. He was ranked second for most of the season until the COVID pause for Detroit Lakes at the end of the regular season dropped him to 7th by the start of sections.
Henderson went 1-2 in three 170-pound matches running into a familiar foe in the semifinals.
After scoring three points in the second and third period of a 6-1 first round win over Simley sophomore Travis Smith, Henderson squared up against Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus Connor Tulenchik for a spot in the finals.
Henderson had won 30 of 31 matches up to that point, the one loss coming from Tulenchik at sections.
Tulenchik led 2-1 after the first period and 3-2 after two. Henderson’s escape in the third was the only point scored forcing sudden death overtime, where Tulenchik scored a takedown to advance.
Henderson and Kasson-Mantorville junior Kail Wynia dueled to a 2-all tie after the first period of the fourth place match. Wynia prevailed, outscoring Henderson 4-1 in both of the final two periods to win 10-4 and capture third place.
Henderson finished the year with an excellent record of 30-3 and improved on a state ranking of 8th heading into the postseason.
