Detroit Lakes looked mired in the four spot of Section 8-4A after winning 14-12 at Pequot Lakes Wednesday night, but the Becker Bulldogs defeated Willmar 35-0 Thursday evening to drop the Cardinals into four and move DL into the third position after the QRF calculations were completed for playoff seeding Friday morning.

The two teams were separated by less than two QRF points in the final tally: DL having 51.6 to Willmar’s 50.2.

The QRF tiebreaker was needed with the scores so close. With no head-to-head meetings and playing in different districts, the third scenario is overall winning percentage. Willmar’s loss to Becker dropped the Cardinals to 4-2 overall; DL is 5-1.

In 8AAA, undefeated Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton is the top seed and gets a bye with a seven-team section after Thief River Falls ended their season due to COVID. The Rebels have a signature win at Class 4A Detroit Lakes and against Pequot and Perham, both on the road.

Barnesville (6-0) and Pelican Rapids (4-1) are the top two seeds in 8AA and get byes. Both teams reached the section final last year with the Trojans advancing to state.

Frazee is seeded fourth and will host Warroad.

Mahnomen-Waubun is the favorite to get back on top of Section 8A with only four teams playing. The teams will get opening night off on Tuesday. The Thunderbirds host Ada-Borup and defending champions Polk County West plays Red Lake County at East Grand Forks high school Saturday, Nov. 21.
