PERHAM - The Perham Yellowjackets (1-1) notched their first win of the season and Detroit Lakes fell to 1-2 after a 3-0 sweep by scores of (25-22, 25-20, 25-18) Tuesday night in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday night. “We played acceptable, at times, but when it came to the critical moments in each set, that required us to dig down deep, we came up short.” Laker Head Coach Jim Wood said. The Yellowjackets, on the other hand, found ways to capitalize in each set and put the throttle down in crunch time. The first set was back and forth with the teams tying at eight points each and DL holding a 17-14 advantage setting up junior Maria Rutten who served three straight winners on her serve pounding the ball hard down the middle of the Laker defense for a 20-14 lead. DL battled back to 20-19 behind strong serving from Katie Larson. DL went on a short run thanks to a solid block by Rutten and a kill by Ella Von Ruden put Perham at set point 24-21. The Lakers took the first set on a serve into the net by the Lakers.
The Lakers played from behind most of the match. After scoring the first point of the second set, Perham took a 14-11 lead on a crucial point in the match as DL’s Shay Nielsen smoked a kill that looked like an instant point for the Lakers but was popped back over after an amazing dig in the Perham back row. Frankie Hutchinson stemmed that burst of momentum with a quick kill for the Lakers and Larson tied the set at 15 moments later. The teams tied again at 17 on a tough block at the net by Von Ruden on DL’s Alyssa Austin. Austin led the Lakers with three blocks of her own. Perham scored seven points to DL’s two down the stretch for the 25-20 set two victory. “I thought we played really well,” Perham Head Coach Eryn Moser said. “Our goal was to cut back on unforced errors and play with a fearless attitude. I thought we were successful at both. We really served well. I thought Ella (Von Ruden) and Olivia (Strand) did a great job at the net blocking.” Each Yellowjacket had a game-high five blocks. Overall, Perham was the more consistent team and did so missing starter Hope Slettebak for a second game after she injured an ankle in preseason. Slettebak is one of only two seniors on Perham’s club. “Perham didn’t blast the ball at us, but they always came with a steady and sure attack,” Wood said. “They were doing a better job at getting their digs and passes to the setter to run their offense and it showed on the scoreboard.” It showed early in the third set as DL busted out with four straight points and continued builiding on the lead to a 10-point cushion at 20-10 taking the final set 25-18. Shay Nielsen led the Lakers with nine kills. Kyra Vagle had six. Sophie Wood led in digs with nine. Nielsen and Allison Berg both had six. Nielsen added three aces. Von Ruden led Perham in kills with eight. Maria Rutten added seven. Serena Langen had a game-high 16 assists. Amy Scheidecker had 15 digs, a number of which were game-changers. “Amy can be amazing,” Moser said. “We are shaking this loss off and focusing on the future,” Wood said.
