DL closes out three straight to down Nuggets

The Laker volleyball team reeled off three straight set wins after dropping the first Tuesday night to defeat Hawley 3-1 in a Section 8AA match at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium.

After falling behind from a 25-18 Nuggets’ victory in the first set, the Lakers found ways to win crucial points in three tight games.

DL led 11-6 early in set two and held off the Nuggets to a tie at 20-20. The teams traded six points with Hawley’s Paige Thompson knotting the score at 23 on a block of Teeya Doppler.

The Lakers got to set point on a Nugget error and with Faith Keller serving, Bre Price put the set away for a 25-23 win to event the match.

DL opened up a 6-0 lead at the start of the third, but Hawley rallied to tie the set at 20 and force a race to five for the win.

Doppler made back-to-back kills from a tied score at 22 to give DL match point and Laura Prussia sealed the set two points later for a 25-23 victory in the third and DL’s first lead in the match 2-1.

The entirety of the fourth set was played with a deficit of three points or less for both teams.

DL’s Anna Cihak’s kill put both teams in familiar territory tied at 20. DL scored three straight points taking a 23-20 lead on kills by Prussia and Cihak. The Nuggets answered with two straight points, but Cihak ‘s team-leading 15th kill of the night produced match point and Courtnee Ziegler sealed the victory with an ace from the service line.

Doppler added 11 kills. Cihak and Ziegler each had a pair of ace serves.

Keller and Autumn Kulik led in digs with eight and seven, respectively.

The Lakers improved to 10-11 overall and are 7-3 in 10 section matches. Hawley dropped to 12-9 overall and are 5-4 in 8AA games.

DL hosts Moorhead (8-7) in the final home game of the regular season Thursday, Oct. 16.
