Warroad picked up a much-needed victory Saturday afternoon defeating Detroit Lakes 3-2 in Section 8A hockey at Kent Freeman Arena. The win was the second in 10 games for the Warriors snapping a five-game skid, including a tough 4-3 overtime loss Friday night at Fergus Falls. Warroad never trailed, building a 3-1 lead over DL by the second intermission and holding the Lakers to just one goal in the final frame to seal the win. The Warriors opened scoring on the power play. A shot from the point was wide right of Laker goalie Austin Fritz but the carom bounced to Max Oelkers attacking the net right wing and the Warroad senior buried the puck. Fritz had no chance on the play. The Lakers had a shot at finishing the final five minutes of the first period on the power play after a boarding major called on Warroad sophomore Kip Knutson. One minute into the man advantage, Tyler Berby was whistled for interference sending both clubs to four-on-four play. The Lakers ended up with 2:38 of power play time and went five-on-three after a crosschecking penalty called against Warroad’s Cayne Kimble for a hit on Tanner Berby near the half boards. DL won an offensive zone faceoff and Jon Richards set up Adam Gotchie with a cross ice pass from circle to circle and Gotchie scored his first career varsity goal from the right wing to send the game to the first intermission tied 1-1. Josh Bollig started the play with the secondary assist.

Warroad added a pair of second period goals by Dryden Thompson and Logan Wallace, both scored at the goal mouth. Thompsgon stuffed a loose puck in at the backside post four minutes into the period. Wallace buried a friendly rebound right side to go up 3-1 at 10:46. DL built momentum early in the third period. A Jace Kovash shot from the left wing got through Warroad goalie Noah Harren and bounced through the corner of the crease just past the post. Warroad gained two important minutes of power play time when Richards was whistled for an innocuous, but after the whistle, slash on Harren as the Warroad junior made a save and Richards’ gave Harren’s glove and waffle a poke four minutes into the third period. DL’s leading scorer was held to one assist and picked up four minor penalties in the game, three in the second period. The Lakers’ second line of Trey Seebold, Ryan Paskey and Carter Schwan buzzed the Warroad net with four minutes to play but came up empty. DL cut the lead to 3-2 at 14:28 when Jacob Anderson skated around the net and was able to find open space glove side on Harren unassisted. Harren looked comfortable in net as Warroad kept the Lakers at bay in the final two minutes. DL falls to 6-3 and the loss snaps a six-game Laker winning streak. The Warriors outshot DL 28-20. Oelkers had a multi-point night for Warroad with a goal and an assist on Wallace’s game-winner. The Lakers played without one of their top defensemen Jack DeConcini. DeConcini sat out Saturday’s game after receiving a game misconduct Friday night in the victory over Wadena-Deer Creek. The Lakers’ two-goal game was the lowest offensive output in seven games. DL is 0-3 when scoring two or fewer goals, 6-0 in games scoring three or more. DL’s next game is against West Fargo (5-2) Monday, Dec. 28 in the first round of the Fergus Falls Holiday Invitational.
