Greer, Ortloff, Baker end with podium finishes
Three Lakers traversed their wrestling brackets to end the season and join Detroit Lakes’ first-ever state champion Isaiah Thompson with podium finishes completing a highly successful year for Laker wrestling.
Junior Fabyon Greer ran the table after a first round loss winning four consecutive matches in wrestlebacks to claim third place at 138-pounds.
Greer drew the top seed and dropped a 3-0 decision to Tanner Kroells of Delano to open the tournament. Kroells kept Greer in check and negated his speed.
Greer got right back on track cruising through his first two wrestlebacks winning by matching scores of 7-1 over Quinn Christofferson of South St. Paul and Matthew Pettis of St. Peter.
Dassel-Cokato’s Prestin Bradley stood in the way of a berth in the third place match. Greer and Bradley went to overtime with Greer advancing in an 8-6 victory.
Kroells lost to eventual 138-pound champion Bennett Berge of Kasson-Mantorville in the semis and set Greer up with a rematch for third place.
Greer made no mistake in taking out Kroells 8-3 to finish his season with a record of 33-9.
Ortloff and Baker place fourth
Senior two-seed Braydon Ortloff was a match away from putting two Lakers into the championship finals. Peyton Mortenson of Dawson-Boyd-Lac Qui Parle stole Ortloff’s shot at a title by one point winning 8-7 in the 160-pound semifinal.
The loss set up a rematch of the Section 8AA championship with Thief River Falls’ senior Josh Bernier. Bernier defeated Ortloff by fall at 3:46. Ortloff finished the year 25-3 making an impressive comeback after missing the first half of the season recovering from a knee injury.
Ortloff cruised to the semis with a 15-5 major decision over Brett Kirchner of St. Cloud Apollo. Ortloff led 4-1 and 10-3 after the second period in a dominating performance. He won his opening match against Zach Stahl of Marshall advancing in a 16-6 major decision. Ortloff led 6-2 after one period and 8-3 after the second
The No. 2-seed at 152 pounds Austin Baker made a deep run, much like Greer, after losing his first round match. Baker was defeated by Annandale/Maple Lake’s Walker Weege 9-4 in overtime to start the tournament. Baker held leads of 2-0 and 4-3 after the first four minutes, but Weege tied the match in the third and scored a takedown and a near fall in OT to advance.
The DL senior responded with three consecutive victories to reach the third place match. Baker defeated Gavin Christofferson in a 12-3 major decision and took out Hutchinson’s Jordan Stenzel 4-2 in overtime. To get to the third place match, Baker beat Joe Morris of Big Lake in a 13-4 major decision to set up a rematch with Weege. Weege got the better of Baker again capturing third in a 6-2 decision. Baker finished the year at 38-6 with a fourth place finish.

Wamre’s quarterfinal was a tight match with Kaleb Haase of Redwood-River Valley. Wamre clinch a spot in the final four of the 220-pound weight class with a 4-3 decision. Steven Hajas of Delano kept Wamre out of the championship match in a shutout 5-0 semifinal decision.
