DL wrestlers to battle familiar foes for Rick Lee title

No. 9AA Detroit Lakes took out Class AAA Bemidji for the second time this season and blew out Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena and Ottertail Central to improve to 9-0 in duals and advance to championship pool competition Saturday at the Rick Lee Lumberjack Duals tournament at Bemidji high school Friday, Jan. 11.

Detroit Lakes will square off with No. 3AA Perham, No. 5A Frazee and Thief River Falls, a top 20 team in Class AA and section rival.

The Lakers only close match on day one was a 28-25 victory over Bemidji. DL never trailed in the match but the teams were tied at 19 after DL forfeited at 160-pounds with five matches to go.

Brennen Sather and Isaiah Thompson recorded back-to-back decisions. Sather won 2-1 at 170 over Clay Olsen and Thompson, ranked No. 2AA at 170, bumped up to 182 and scored an 8-3 victory over Nic Geiger. DL led 25-19.

Bemidji’s No. 8AAA 195-pounder Peter Moen duked it out with Noah Olds coming away with a 5-3 win over the Laker senior to close within three points 25-22.

DL’s Jordan Skadsem took a lot of pressure off heavyweight Charles Barnett erasing a 2-0 early lead to Chase Smith scoring an escape and a takedown en route to a 4-2 victory that gave Barnett a six-point lead to hold against No. 7AAA Kaleb Beam.

Beam scored on a three-point near fall but Barnett went the distance in a 7-0 individual loss but a win that clinched a spot in the championship pool.

Cade Okeson and Cade Jackson scored 12 crucial points with pins to open the match at 106 and 113.

No. 5AA 138-pounder Fabyon Greer had a major decision victory over Thade Osborn 15-6 wrestling down at 132.

At 145, Blaine Henderson blanked Darren Roth 3-0.

DL defeated section foes Ottertail Central handily 47-15 and Blackduck-Cass Lake Bena 60-15 in the day’s earlier matches.

On the day, Jackson was 3-0 winning by fall in each match. Greer was 3-0 scoring two majors and a fall. Thompson was 3-0 with two pins and a decision and Jordan Skadsem was 3-0 by way of fall and two decisions.

Perham defeated Bloomington Kennedy 74-6, Brainerd 52-16 and Cambridge-Isanti 68-3 to advance.

Frazee beat Badger-Greenbush-Middle River 36-30 and Kenyon-Wanamingo 30-28 in a pair of tight matches. Big Lake handed the Hornets a 44-32 loss but fell to BGMR 40-26 to send Frazee to the championship pool.

Thief River Falls took out United North Central 42-25, Pierz 34-31 and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton-Westbrook-Walnut-Grove 38-31 to advance undefeated.

All four teams will wrestle each other for first place beginning Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
