Eight DL wrestlers advance to section finals

Eight Detroit Lakes wrestlers advanced to the the championship match of their respective weight divisions Friday, Feb. 22 in Hawley during day one of the Section 8AA Individual wrestling tournament.

The Lakers have 13 wrestlers still alive in the tournament with five in wrestlebacks looking for a state bid. The top two wrestlers in each weight class advance to state. The second seed is decided by a true second match, if necessary.

Cade Okeson advanced to face Owen Werner of Perham in the 106-pound class final. At 113, Cade Jackson will take on Perham’s Blaze Brady. Bradly Swiers vies for the 120-pound title with Park Rapids’ Ashton Clark.

DL’s 126-pounder Brody Ullyott faces Jake Andres of Pierz. Fabyon Greer and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton’s Jack Fuchs with square off for the 138-pound title.

Defending state champion Isaiah Thompson takes on D-G-F’s Preston Johnson in the 170-pound championship match.

Noah Olds and Perham’s Zach Peterson match up at 182-pounds.

At heavyweight, Charles Barnett faces Fergus Falls’ Dustin Portales.

In wrestlebacks, Blake Weber (132) takes on Sauk Centre-Melrose's Coy Sjogren; Blaine Henderson (145) wrestles PLPRB's Harley Large; Brennen Sather (160) faces DGF's Carter Schmidt; Jordan Skadsem wrestles Tyson Back of Fergus Falls and Andrew Annette and Thief River Falls' Mason Iverson will battle at 220 pounds.
