Hornets qualify eight to state wrestling

The Frazee wrestling team advanced eight grapplers to the Class A state tournament with three Section 8A champions and five runners-up after section individual competition in Crookston Saturday, Feb. 23.

Hornet wrestlers captured three straight upper weight division championships beginning with Brett Graham at 170 pounds, followed by Gabe Drewes at 182 and Coleton Borah at 195.

Graham, a junior with a record of 33-11, pinned Joe DeZelar of Badger-Greenbush-Middle River at three-minutes, 32-seconds after receiving a bye to the semifinals. In the final, Graham advanced with a shutout effort defeating Tristyn Fergus of Red Lake County Central 7-0.

Drewes (28-10) pinned Fosston-Bagley’s Teigen Hextell late in the third period to advance to the championship match and won a high-scoring 14-10 decision over Roseau’s Dale Grindahl for the 182-pound title.

Borah (18-4) advanced with a first round pin of Fertile-Beltrami’s Dakota Qualley in the opening period and followed the win up with a 16-1 technical fall over Fosston-Bagley’s Jacob Lomen. Borah defeated Roseau’s Sawyer Klatt 16-11 in the 195-pound championship.

Jake Nagel lost an 11-2 major decision to United North Central’s Ethan Hendrickson for the 106 title, but advanced to state as the runner-up having defeated third place finisher Tony Olson of BGMR.

At 113, Christian Carlson lost a 10-5 championship decision but advanced as the runner-up without needing a true second match.

Kaden Hiemenz (138) was defeated 2-1 in the 138-pound title match and advanced having defeated Roseau’s Race Knockenmus 9-3 in the semifinals negating a true second match.

Luke Tweeton was the 220-pound runner-up after a 4-2 loss in the 220 final to Dominik Vacura of BGMR. Tweeton is seeded second in the state 220 bracket; Vacura is the No. 1 seed.

Heavyweight Tony Malikowski needed a true second victory over United North Central’s Jared Seibert winning 2-1 in overtime to advance to state. Malikowski faced BGMR’s Zach Evans in the 285 final losing by fall at 5:56.

Tyler Moe placed third at 120 after a 5-2 true second defeat to UNC’s Isaac Tellers. Lukas Volstad finished third at 126 by way of a 7-5 decision over UNC’s Dylan Rasmussen in the third place match.

Brock Barlund placed fifth at 132, as did Ricky Rofort at 152 pounds.

The Minnesota Class A state team tournament begins Thursday, Feb. 28 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul with the individual tournament beginning on Friday and running through to the championship matches Saturday night.
