FERGUS FALLS - The Laker boys and girls cross country teams competed Thursday at the John Hermes Invitational.
The boys team finished in fifth place, running without top runner Matt Lundstrom, who skipped the race after winning the Milaca Mega meet.

The girls’ team placed eighth overall.

Aaron Johnson led the boys’ team running in the top spot for the Lakers in a time of 17:33.3.

"Aaron Johnson was outstanding with a top ten finish in a big meet. He is really running well at this point in the season," Head Coach Bill Kvebak said.

Connor Haugrud, Zach Buboltz and Austin Gedrose finished 24th, 25th and 32nd, respectively.

"We have a nice pack of three guys working together in our lineup led by Connor Haugrud who is improving every week and bringing guys with him. Zach Buboltz had a huge race for us this week in the pack with Connor and Austin Gedrose.

Jace Engelstad placed 46th in 19:04.7 and Sam Priem made his varsity debut with a 48th place finish in 19:09.3.

Makenzie Ostlie led the Laker girls for the second straight meet placing 17th overall in a time of 17:05.2.

"Kenzie looked as comfortable as she has all year," Head Coach Jon Freeman said. "She ran a time that equaled her time at Little Falls and faster than Milaca. This can be looked at as an improvement because the FF course it a more difficult course then the other two. She has had health issues and seems to becoming out of it."

Sarah Schumacher returned after not running in Milaca three spots behind Ostlie in 17:14.9.

"Sarah struggled with the course and heat," Freeman said. "She also controlled the team huddle and didn't let the negatives overcome the team. She has been nursing leg soreness but continues to gut out workouts and refuses to quit. Sarah is rising to the top as a leader on many levels."

Haley Groth and Heather Krunkel packed together for finishes in 46th and 47th place.

Haley Groth got out well For the third race in a row. Haley is figuring out what she can do. It's been fun to watch how she is challenging herself the past meets. Her time and place-count has been improving because of it.

"Heather has has two good races back to back," said Freeman. "Although she didn't like the heat, she probably handled it as well as anyone on her team. Heather is just starting to figure out how to race. She starting to tap into her talent. I believe that if she keeps pushing herself she might be in the top 15 come conference time."

Kendra Kvebak and Elizabeth Kvebak did the same in 61st and 64th place.

In junior varsity action the boys’ XC team placed let by Brady Labine in 14th place 19:25.9; Gabe Kitzman in 19th 19:40.8, and Mason Sampson in 23rd 19:44.2.
