The Detroit Lakes volleyball team capped off its best season in program history with a 3-0 sweep of Mahtomedi in the Class 3A consolation game on Saturday morning. Seniors Jalynn Gunderson, Olivia Clark Burnette and Sadie Stroeing, along with head coach Lynnsey Machakaire, talked about reaching new heights for Laker volleyball and the thrill of competing at the state tournament.
The Detroit Lakes volleyball team beat Monticello 3-0 in the consolation semifinal match on Friday morning. The Lakers earned a spot in the fifth-place game against Mahtomedi on Saturday at 8:30 a.m at the Xcel Energy Center.
The Detroit Lakes volleyball team pushed second-seeded Kasson-Mantorville to its limit. The Lakers took he reigning Class 3A runner-up to five sets before falling into the consolation side of the bracket. The Lakers' state tournament run will continue on Friday against Monticello. The Detroit Lakes volleyball team handled fourth-seeded Sauk Rapids-Rice on Tuesday night with a sweep, clinching a spot in the Section 8-3A championship game against Alexandria on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Moorhead. The Lakers look to keep up their strong play at the net as they aim to go to state for the first time in program history.
Detroit Lakes' Ava Jones was honored by head coach Lynnsey Machakaire and her teammates before the first serve of the Section 8-3A quarterfinal on Thursday. She owns the school record for assists despite missing her sophomore year with a season-ending hamstring injury. The junior setter is committed to play volleyball at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and helped lead the top-seeded Lakers to a first-round sweep over the Eagles.
