In December, Minnesota Management and Budget forecast a surplus for the state government budget of $1.5 billion for the next biennium. A few days ago, it released its February Budget and Economic Forecast. The headline is that the surplus is now projected to be a third smaller — $1 billion over the coming biennium.
Rankings of the states by various criteria seem to be a national pastime in the US. As I've written before, it is worth looking closely at how these rankings are constructed before trumpeting the headline finding. A case in point is 24/7 Wall Street's rankings of the "Best and Worst Run States in America."
