PELICAN RAPIDS, Minn. — Jessica Henry is at heart a Minnesota girl, even though she teaches at Hastings College in Nebraska. She was born in Moorhead, graduated from what was then called Moorhead State University and spends time each summer at her father's place on Franklin Lake near this small lakes country city. It's only proper, then, that a major project Henry spearheaded for about 50 students at Hastings this school year had its roots and inspiration in Minnesota.
The athletic director at Southern Illinois and former Minnesota Gophers football coach Jerry Kill ripped current Gophers coach P.J. Fleck in a radio interview, saying Fleck is "about himself" and his "ego gets carried away." In an interview on Sirius XM College Sports, Kill aired a long list of grievances about Fleck, who was an assistant under Kill at Northern Illinois for two seasons. "He coached with me, but after that, you know, he changed a lot.
PELICAN RAPIDS, Minn. — This Minnesota lakes country town is swapping burgers. After losing its McDonald's restaurant this spring, the Park Region Cooperative convenience store/gas station at the south end of Broadway is replacing it with a Burger King. "The Whopper replaces the Big Mac in Pelican Rapids," said Greg Larson, general manager of the co-op.
Zebra mussels have been found in Rush Lake in Otter Tail County, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The DNR said in a press release there are several lakes near Rush where the invasive species had already been confirmed. DNR invasive species specialists confirmed two adult zebra mussels in separate locations about 75 feet from the public access.
The Otter Tail County Board of Commissioners earlier this month voted to delay its next decision on a proposed casino/hotel/resort complex on Star Lake. The board will next take up the issue at a hearing Aug. 22 in Fergus Falls, Minn.
Forum News Service's Mike McFeely had a chance to record an interview with Detroit Lakes, Minn., product and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen earlier today for my 970 WDAY radio show. Thielen had his career day as a Viking on Sunday with seven catches for 127 yards and a touchdown in a 31-13 victory over Houston. Thielen says his wife gave birth to the couple’s first child at 3 a.m. Tuesday and so he’s “running on fumes.”
